Mondo Video II: STORY OF RICKY (DF) & MEN BEHIND THE SUN (OmeU)

The second edition of MONDO VIDEO will go down on May 30th! We’re presenting two infamous cult films from the golden age of Hong Kong genre cinema — once again projected from original, uncut VHS prints.

STORY OF RICKY (Nam Nai-Choi, 1991, German dub) is an outrageously over-the-top splatter workout that gleefully abandons any notion of good taste. Wrongfully sentenced to a long prison term, Ricky-Oh (Fan Siu-wong) finds himself in a facility ruled by brutal guards and tyrannical cell block bosses. Instead of submitting, he takes on the system, using his superhuman abilities to fight the prison warden and his four henchmen— what follows is pure cinematic mayhem where no one gets out unscathed. We’re screening the German dubbed version, which pushes the absurdity of this gorefest to its absolute peak.

There’s nothing to laugh about, however, in MEN BEHIND THE SUN (Mou Tun-Fei, 1988, Mandarin with English subtitles). Loosely based on the historical atrocities committed by Japan’s Unit 731 during World War II, the film follows a group of young recruits transferred to a highly restricted military compound, where they witness horrific human experimentation on prisoners of war. Caught between indoctrination and systematic dehumanization, a cold, clinical horror unfolds that makes this film a true endurance test. Consider yourselves warned.
