New Orleans-based punk band TWISTED TEENS shirk genre conventions on their chaotic, energetic, and wildly creative live shows, diving into surprising thematic territory and securing them as one of the most original bands in the contemporary DIY punk scene.
Fronted and masterminded by prolific DIY musician and songwriter Cas P. Ian (the same person behind well-known folk-punk band Blackbird Raum), Twisted Teens’ lineup includes acoustic and electric guitar, pedal steel, drums, bass, and keys. For this record, Cas P. Ian (credited elsewhere as CPN, Caspian, and C-SPAN) collaborated with pedal steel player RJ Santos. The two appear together in a tintype photo on the album cover. Drummer Magnus Nymo (Blackbird Raum, FORK, Lyngfarer, Regn) and keyboardist Cameron Snyder feature on one track each — “something I haven’t told ya” (co-written by Nymo) and “rando,” respectively.
From a foundation of old-school rock ‘n’ roll and punk subgenres — proto-punk, post-punk, surf punk — while also incorporating elements of country, folk, electronic music, and even pop. But fans of saccharine pop or traditional country are unlikely to find anything too comforting on this record. As Cas P. Ian puts it, “I wanted to make something that felt like a garage rock record but […] is definitely not a garage rock record.”

Recent FatCat signings, ABDOMEN are a Netherlands power trio, based in Leeuwarden, Frisia, up in the country’s North. Sometimes described in the Dutch press as “post-grunge garage”, they themselves are keen to avoid any pigeon-holes or genre labels.
Thanks to COVID-19, Abdomen’s new, sophomore long-player, Yes, I Don’t Know, took something like 2 years to record. Working with Rasmus Bredvig, at Tapetown, in Aarhus, Denmark, the songs were fine-tuned through extensive rehearsal, performance, and sometimes totally transformed in the studio. The lead single, Dazed, for example, began as a demo set at a frantic pace.
It was Rasmus who suggested slowing it down – “Something like 5 times” – morphing, mutating, the track into an epic, melodic, psyche mantra. A heavy, heavy hypnotic groove. With a chanted vocal and wall of phased, psychedelic shredding, there are echoes of outfits such as Loop and Spacemen 3 – their stoned / stoner “aesthetics”, all be it turned up to 11. A head-banging, trance-inducing, transcendental raga, with its sights set on spiritual lift-off, the piece aims to create a path away from the negative toward a more positive way of life.

Whoever plays as support for a band that has, uh, well, risen from the dead, uh, yes – such a band can afford to keep quiet about themselves. The music speaks for itself anyway. And the four snoops from Dresden also have an astonishing output: despite the pandemic, it’s great to be able to release albums every two years. It’s rather strange that NO WAVES star cuts haven’t been decorating the youth rooms of the country for a long time. Those who desperately need labels can cling awkwardly to post-punk, synth-wave and lo-fi garage. But of course that doesn’t do it justice in toto. There is singing from many throats, often with a lot of reverb. It’s eerily beautiful and guaranteed to give you goosebumps in places you wouldn’t have thought you could get goosebumps from.
